Seven straight wins had carried Rangers to Dens Park on Saturday night and, for about twenty minutes after half-time, an eighth looked a formality. Then Dan Neil played a backpass that did not reach his goalkeeper, Callum Jones got there first, and Derek McInnes was left describing the moment afterwards as being "like a balloon popping". Dundee 2 Rangers 2, and a chance to go top of the Scottish Premiership gone.
A first half Rangers would rather forget
The visitors were disjointed before the break and Dundee punished them, Bradley Fink putting the hosts in front. Badredine Bouanani levelled just before half-time, which flattered Rangers more than it reflected the balance of play. McInnes said as much himself, and gave the hosts their due.
"It does feel like a missed opportunity, but in fairness to Dundee they were good value in the first half," he said. "It shows you why they are where they are in the league. But we can't come away from home and have to score three goals to win a game."
Twenty-five good minutes, and then the mistake
After the interval Rangers raised the tempo and took control, and Nicolas Raskin's long-range strike looked like the goal that would settle it. Instead came Neil's mishit pass towards Ivor Pandur, Jones pouncing, and an equaliser Dundee had done enough to deserve.
McInnes praised the 25 minutes that followed the restart, saying the period "shows what the team are capable of". Derek Ferguson, who won titles at Ibrox, was less inclined to take comfort from it. Speaking on BBC Sportsound, the former midfielder said Rangers "can't just play for 20 or 25 minutes" if they want to win games in this league, adding that they had been sensational for that spell but that it has to last 70 minutes or so for a title challenge.
The numbers behind the frustration
The more awkward statistic is the one that follows Rangers around. Their expected goals at Dens Park came in at almost two, which more or less matched what they scored. Across the season, though, they have 13 league goals from an accumulated xG of just under 20 - an underperformance of close to seven goals. That is not a one-off bad night in front of goal; that is a pattern.
"We had so many better chances than that to take the game away from Dundee," McInnes told Sky Sports of the period around Raskin's goal. "It's something we need to be far better at. It's the same kind of theme for me a lot of the time. We've had dominant performances but not really had the goals to show for it."
Having hauled themselves back into contention after a poor start to the campaign, Rangers have handed the initiative back. Celtic host Hearts on Sunday afternoon knowing a win takes them four points clear, and with a demanding run of fixtures ahead, McInnes could do without wastefulness becoming the story of his season.
