Northern Ireland and Georgia drew 0-0 at Windsor Park on Monday night, and the story of the night was a penalty. Isaac Price had the chance to win it late on for the home side, and Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved it.
Northern Ireland stay unbeaten and top of Nations League Group B2, which is a decent return from a window that has seen them beat Ukraine and keep a clean sheet against Hungary. But the draw felt like a point spared rather than a point earned, and a late miss from the spot will sting for a while.
The Late Penalty That Got Away
Price, the West Bromwich Albion attacker who scored his 11th international goal against Ukraine on Friday, stepped up with the match in the balance. Mamardashvili, who plays his club football at Liverpool, kept it out. It was the decisive moment of the night.
Striker Josh Magennis said afterwards that he was "bitterly disappointed" not to take three points, and he had reason to be. He described a chance of his own that he felt he struck well, only for the goalkeeper to be across to it. Michael O'Neill's team never quite found the goal they were after.
A Defence That Keeps Holding
The scoreless draw extends a defensive run that the BBC highlighted before kick-off. Northern Ireland had kept three consecutive clean sheets in this campaign, beating Georgia and Ukraine to nil with a goalless draw against Hungary in between. The BBC's Jonathan Bradley noted that they had kept seven clean sheets in their previous nine Nations League games. Monday's result makes it four in a row in this season's competition.
O'Neill has been quietly proud of that record. Before the match he pointed to his side's low expected-goals figures against, and to the way his team run back and recover when they lose the ball, as evidence that the structure works. Against Ukraine on Friday Northern Ireland won 3-0 with just 27.2 per cent possession, which Opta recorded as the lowest in Nations League history for a win by more than one goal.
What Georgia Took From It
Georgia arrived in Belfast hoping to become the first visitors to score twice at Windsor Park since Cyprus in June 2022. They did not score once. They also did not lose, thanks in large part to their goalkeeper, and a point in Belfast is a respectable return for a side that had lost to Northern Ireland in Georgia earlier in the campaign.
For Northern Ireland the equation is simple. The group lead and an unbeaten run are in hand, and the clean sheets keep piling up. What is missing is a little more cutting edge. If Price had converted, they would be talking about a perfect window instead of a very good one.
