Bournemouth needed a win badly, and Sunderland handed them one. Goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson gave the Cherries a 2-0 victory, their first league win of the season, and lifted them out of the relegation zone. For Marco Rose it was his first three points as a Premier League manager.
Danso's seventeen minutes
Kevin Danso had a miserable start. In the sixth minute Evanilson bullied past the former Tottenham defender and crossed for Tavernier to head into an empty net, his fourth goal of the season. Eleven minutes after that, Evanilson used his strength to get in front of Danso again, the defender pulled him down on the edge of the area with the striker through on goal, and referee Craig Pawson showed a red card. Robin Roefs kept Sunderland in it for a while with good saves, twice denying the Brazilian winger Rayan, and Adam Smith should have scored on a rebound.
A back pass in the second half
Sunderland gifted the second goal three minutes after the restart. Omar Alderete's back pass to Roefs was far too short, Evanilson reached it first, rounded the goalkeeper and slid the ball home. Bournemouth had 29 attempts across the afternoon and arguably should have scored more. Sunderland managed three shots and never tested Djordje Petrovic.
Two clubs going in different directions
Both sides began the day in the bottom three despite winning their opening two Europa League games. Bournemouth had been beaten at Chelsea last week, and they now face AC Milan on Thursday before league games against Manchester United, Aston Villa and Leeds. Tavernier has three of his four goals this season as openers, and Evanilson was involved in both here. Sunderland have four points from seven games, against 11 at the same stage last season, and have lost five times already. They are still winless on the road this season and have not won a league game since beating Fulham on 30 August. Regis Le Bris called the performance very painful.
