Sebastien Pocognoli names his first Scotland squad on Tuesday and two players will be reading their own names on a senior list for the first time. Luke Graham, the Stoke City centre-half, and Robbie Ure, the Sevilla striker, are both in.
Neither pick is a sentimental one. Both, in different ways, are about time running out.
Graham earned this in the Championship, not at Hampden
Graham was around the squad in May, part of the pre-World Cup training camp after a breakthrough season at Dundee that won him the club's players' player and young player of the year awards. He sat on the bench for the send-off friendly against Curacao without getting on. That was Steve Clarke's last match in the Hampden dugout.
Since moving to Stoke he has played every minute of a run that has the Potters unbeaten in four. He is 22, with three under-21 caps behind him, and a centre-half who is already an automatic starter in England's second tier is exactly the profile a new manager looks for when he wants to move on from an ageing back line.
The Ure call is partly about Ukraine
Ure's route here is stranger. A former Rangers academy player, he scored 20 goals with three assists in 20 games for Sirius in Sweden, dragged them to the top of the table, and priced himself into a £5.5m move to Sevilla this summer. Half of Europe was watching.
He has not scored in Spain yet. He is also 22, and he is eligible for Ukraine as well as Scotland, which is the detail that turns a maybe into a now. Pocognoli appears to want him tied down before anyone else asks.
A clean slate, deliberately
Clarke resigned after Scotland failed to get out of the group at a major tournament for the first time under him. The Belgian who replaced him has been expected from day one to freshen up a squad that had grown old together, and Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken says he is "confident" a few of his own players will be involved. The Tynecastle front three of James Wilson, Calvin Miller and Josh McPake have been the best watch in the Premiership this autumn, and Scott Brown is among those talking the wingers up.
Pocognoli's first competitive test comes on Saturday 26 September, away to Slovenia in Nations League B. Switzerland come to Hampden three days later, which is when Scotland supporters will get their first proper look at whatever this becomes.
Squad context: Sebastien Pocognoli announces his first Scotland squad at 11:00 BST on Tuesday 15 September 2026. Luke Graham (Stoke City, 22) and Robbie Ure (Sevilla, 22) receive maiden senior call-ups. Scotland open Nations League B away to Slovenia on 26 September and host Switzerland on 29 September.
