Newcastle United have now conceded eight goals to Dominic Calvert-Lewin across his career, and by the time he trudged off to a standing ovation at Elland Road on Monday night they must have been glad to see the back of him. Leeds won 4-1. Calvert-Lewin scored one and had a hand in another, and the home crowd spent large parts of the evening reminding the visitors how much they had spent on a squad that got bullied.
He arrived on a free transfer. That detail did not go unmentioned in the stands.
Three goals in fourteen first-half minutes
Newcastle were level for half an hour and then the roof fell in. Lewis Miley turned Ao Tanaka's shot into his own net on 32 minutes. Two minutes later Jayden Bogle finished off a James Justin delivery, a goal Calvert-Lewin looked genuinely baffled to lose credit for after his header took a final touch on the way in. Then, right on the interval, the striker bundled one home himself to make it 3-0.
Noah Okafor added a fourth from the edge of the area on 59 minutes after a set-piece broke loose. Bazoumana Toure got one back for Newcastle in the 90th, which flattered nobody.
Farke makes the England argument for him
Thomas Tuchel names his squad on Friday for Nations League fixtures against Spain and the Czech Republic, and Daniel Farke did not pretend to be neutral about it. "He's a handful and tough for each and every defender," the Leeds manager said. "If he shows this type of form, he's definitely one of the best strikers in this league."
The numbers back him rather than the manager's loyalty. Three goals in four games. The leading English striker in the Premier League right now, at a moment when Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins are both drawing their wages in Saudi Arabia. Calvert-Lewin is also only the second Leeds player to score in five consecutive home league games, after Mark Viduka managed it across 2003.
Jamie Carragher, watching for Sky Sports, called the display "almost perfect" and said the 29-year-old was unplayable. He also admitted the obvious Evertonian regret: why did they let him go?
Jaissle swore. Twice.
Matthias Jaissle had gone five games unbeaten in his first spell as Newcastle head coach, and the sharpness of the fall bothered him more than the scoreline. He swore in his post-match news conference to make the point.
"We were not matching as a team the level of intensity, the level of duel behaviours, the level of physicality," he said. "This is non-negotiable. These are young lads. The learning curve needs to be fast."
There is a structural problem underneath the emotion. Newcastle have faced more shots than any other Premier League side this season. They were clinical enough in August for that not to matter; against Liverpool, Tottenham and Bournemouth they managed just eight efforts on target combined. Elland Road was the night the arithmetic caught up.
Leeds are quietly one of the best teams of 2026
Only Arsenal (52), Manchester City (50), Manchester United (45) and Bournemouth (37) have taken more Premier League points in the 2026 calendar year than Leeds, who are on 35. One defeat in thirteen league games. Farke's side sit third, on eight points from four, and host Crystal Palace on Sunday.
