Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola says Bradley Barcola has trained fully all week and will travel to Ipswich Town, leaving the door open for the club record-sized signing to make his debut on Friday night.
Iraola did not dress it up. Asked at his Thursday press conference whether the Frenchman was ready, he said Barcola had come through a complete week of training and would be in the squad at Portman Road.
Being in the squad and starting are two very different things, and the Spaniard knows it. Barcola has not played a competitive match since 18 July, when France lost 6-4 to England. Six and a half weeks without a game is a long time for a winger whose whole game is built on repeated sprints.
What Liverpool paid, and why it matters
The deal went through on Monday. An initial fee of around 106 million pounds, with a further 17 million in add-ons, which makes Barcola the fifth most expensive signing in Premier League history. Numbers like that follow a player into every press conference he attends for the next two years.
Iraola called him the priority. Not one of several options, not a fallback after somebody else said no. The priority. That tells you something about how Liverpool viewed their left side going into the window.
Gakpo stays, and Iraola seems pleased about it
The other half of Thursday was about who did not leave. Cody Gakpo was linked with a move for most of August and stayed put. Iraola described him as smart, which in his vocabulary is close to a compliment about football intelligence rather than manners.
It leaves Liverpool with a genuine problem of the good kind on the left flank. Two players who want the same patch of grass, both of whom expect to start. Managers say they enjoy that. Some of them even mean it.
Ipswich away is not a soft landing
Portman Road on a Friday night, with a home crowd who have waited all week for this, is not the fixture you pick when you want to ease a new signing in. Ipswich have made life awkward for better teams than they were given credit for last season.
The likeliest version of the night is Barcola on the bench, brought on around the hour mark with the game stretched and Ipswich legs going. That is when a player of his profile does the most damage, and it protects him from a hamstring problem in his first week.

- How quickly Barcola finds the overlap with whoever plays behind him
- Ipswich sitting deep and inviting Liverpool to break them down centrally
Liverpool spent heavily again this summer and the squad still looks unbalanced in places. Barcola does not fix everything. He does fix the one thing Iraola clearly cared about most.
