Manchester United's 2026/27 Premier League campaign got off to the worst possible start as they fell to a shock 2-0 defeat at newly-promoted Hull City on the opening day of the season. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy in the first half left Michael Carrick's side chasing the game from the off, and despite a half-time shake-up, United could not find a way back.
Ajayi capitalised on slack United defending to poke home from close range on 17 minutes, and Mendy's powerful header doubled Hull's advantage before the break. The MKM Stadium was rocking, and the Tigers defended with tremendous organisation and discipline for the remainder of the game, restricting United to long-range efforts and half-chances that their goalkeeper dealt with comfortably.
There was one moment of genuine significance in the second half: Marcus Rashford came off the bench at half-time to make his first competitive appearance in 618 days. The forward, who had been frozen out under Ruben Amorim before finally returning during the pre-season, received a warm reception from the travelling support. He worked hard and showed flashes of his old quality, but United as a collective lacked the creativity to unlock a stubborn Hull defence.
The result was historic for all the wrong reasons — it was the first time in Manchester United's history that they had lost a Premier League opening-day fixture to a newly-promoted side, ending a run of 13 unbeaten games (W10 D3) against such opponents. Carrick remained composed in his post-match remarks, insisting "one game doesn't change anything," but the pressure to address the squad's thin depth before September 1 has intensified enormously.
