Manchester City needed everything they had to get their Premier League season off to a winning start. Bournemouth led for most of the match at the Etihad, but City — showing the resilience that has defined their best seasons — found a way. Two late goals, the second coming from Joško Gvardiol in the 91st minute, sealed a 2-1 victory that will feel significant as the weeks go on.
Bournemouth were the better side for long stretches of the game and deservedly went in front through Max Tavernier in the 26th minute. The visitors defended well and pressed aggressively throughout the first half, leaving City looking uncertain at times — not a sight the Etihad crowd is especially used to.
City's Fightback
The turnaround came in the final minutes. First, City levelled in the 84th minute before Gvardiol, arriving late from left-back, rose to head home the winner deep in stoppage time. It was a classic City finish to the kind of game that can define a title race — the ability to take three points from a match where they were largely second best.
Guardiola's side looked short of sharpness in a way that can be attributed to the early stage of the season, with several key players returning from international duty only weeks ago. But the character was there, and the result is what counts.
A Note on Bournemouth
Andoni Iraola's team will feel they deserved more. They were disciplined, direct and genuinely threatening on the counter-attack. Losing to a stoppage-time header is the cruelest of outcomes, and Bournemouth showed on this occasion they are capable of competing with the very best in the division when they are at their best.
For City, the three points are banked and the season is underway. Gvardiol, increasingly important going forward as well as in defence, takes the match ball and the headlines. It might be one of many such moments before the campaign is out.
