Tottenham Hotspur have smashed their own transfer record — set just weeks ago when they signed Mateus Fernandes for £85m — by completing a deal to bring Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a package worth up to £100m. The Italian midfielder, 26, has agreed a long-term contract at Spurs and will work under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who was understood to be the key factor in convincing the player to make the move south.

Why Tottenham Paid This Much

The headline fee demands some context. Newcastle paid AC Milan £55m for Tonali in the summer of 2023. The midfielder then served a ten-month worldwide football ban for betting offences, returned to the Premier League last season, and proceeded to play some of the best football of his career. His performances for Newcastle in the second half of 2025-26 — commanding, inventive, relentless in pressing — drew admiring glances from every major club in Europe. Spurs, who need a player capable of dictating tempo under De Zerbi's possession-heavy system, identified him as exactly that. The £92.5m base fee plus £7.5m in add-ons reflects the fact that several clubs were watching.

The Deal Newcastle Could Not Turn Down

Newcastle's position was tricky. They had no interest in selling a midfielder who had become one of the most important players in their squad, and their first response to Tottenham's initial £75m approach was a flat rejection. But the money eventually became too significant to ignore, particularly given Newcastle's ongoing need to balance the books under Premier League financial rules. Selling Tonali at a £45m profit on what they paid Milan makes the decision defensible, even if it will frustrate their supporters. Newcastle will now turn their attention to finding a replacement before the window closes on September 1.

What Tonali Brings to Spurs

Tottenham have had problems in the middle of the park for several years — too passive, too easily bypassed, lacking the physicality to compete with the league's best sides. Tonali is the answer to all three of those criticisms. He covers enormous amounts of ground, wins the ball back quickly, and has the technical quality to play the short, incisive passes that De Zerbi's system demands constantly. Pairing him with Fernandes in central midfield gives Spurs the most technically equipped midfield they have had in over a decade. The question now is whether they can hold onto both of them.
