The deal has been building for months, and now it is done. Manchester City have agreed to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth 135 million euros, making the 23-year-old one of the most expensive British transfers in history and comfortably City's biggest outlay since they bought Kevin De Bruyne for 55 million pounds back in 2015. The scale of it underlines just how rapidly Anderson's valuation has risen since his breakthrough at Forest, and how seriously City view the midfielder as the answer to a problem they have been trying to solve for a couple of seasons.

Anderson will complete his move after the World Cup, where he is currently part of Thomas Tuchel's England squad. The timing is good for City, with their target arriving from the tournament as one of the most talked-about young midfielders in the world, having featured regularly in England's run to the semifinals. For Forest, it represents a staggering return on a player developed through their academy.

What City are getting

Anderson is not a holding midfielder and he is not an eight in the classic sense. He operates between the lines, comfortable with the ball under pressure, capable of carrying it forward, and good enough in transition to contribute goals and assists from deep positions. He scored 11 goals from midfield in all competitions for Forest last season, which is the kind of return that draws attention at the top clubs. More than the numbers, he brings something City have been missing: a midfielder who can move possession quickly and vertically, not just sideways.

Pep Guardiola reportedly pushed hard for this signing over the winter window and was willing to wait until summer. The 135 million euro fee reflects Forest's negotiating position, they had no reason to sell cheaply, but also reflects the genuine belief at City that Anderson is the kind of player who can operate at the very highest level for the next eight to ten years.

Forest's windfall and what comes next

For Nottingham Forest, this is a transformative sum. The club have been careful with spending since returning to the Premier League, and landing this kind of fee allows them to reshape their squad in ways that were not previously possible. Nuno Espirito Santo will need to find a replacement in the engine room, but with 135 million euros to work with, they can afford to think carefully rather than scramble. It is the kind of sustainable model the club has been building toward.

Transfer context: Elliot Anderson, 23 (born May 2003), Nottingham Forest to Manchester City. Fee: 135m euros (approx. 114m pounds). Transfer to be officially completed post-World Cup 2026.
