Bruno Guimarães: Why Newcastle United Must Do Everything to Keep Their World Cup Star

After the 2026 World Cup, there will be a queue of clubs outside St. James' Park — and it will be very long. Bruno Guimarães has had a tournament that has reminded everyone, in case they had forgotten, just how good he actually is.

Newcastle United signed the Brazilian midfielder from Lyon in January 2022. It cost them £33 million. In the years since, he has become arguably the best central midfielder in the Premier League when fit — the kind of player who controls tempo, wins tackles, arrives with a shot, and makes the players around him better. He has been worth every penny and then some.

What He Did at the World Cup

Brazil arrived in the 2026 World Cup under genuine pressure. A nation that hadn't won the tournament since 2002 and had suffered several painful eliminations at the quarter-final stage, they were desperate for a deep run. Guimarães was at the heart of their midfield throughout.

He scored twice and assisted three more in Brazil's six games. In the Round of 16 against Colombia, he played the full 90 minutes and orchestrated a 3-1 win, his energy and technical precision drawing comparison with some of Brazil's greatest midfielders of previous generations.

His performance against Argentina in the quarter-final — a 1-0 defeat that ended Brazil's tournament — was arguably his best game of the whole competition. He completed 96% of his passes, made four key interceptions, and created four chances. Brazil lost. But Guimarães, personally, won the respect of every neutral watching.

The Vultures Are Circling

That kind of tournament display does not go unnoticed. Arsenal, who have been in the market for a midfielder of exactly this profile, are understood to have already made exploratory contacts. Manchester City, rebuilding under their new manager after Pep Guardiola's exit, are also believed to be watching closely.

Barcelona have long admired him. Real Madrid have him on a list. Bayern Munich have enquired.

In short: every major club in Europe has noticed. And they will all come calling this summer.

Why Newcastle Must Stand Firm

Newcastle are in a different place than they were when they signed Guimarães. They qualified for the Champions League last season. They have Saudi PIF money. They have ambition. And they cannot afford to lose the best player in their squad.

His contract runs until 2028. That gives them leverage. What they must now ensure is that he wants to stay — which means making him a central part of their long-term project, giving him a salary that reflects his importance, and making very clear that Newcastle are on a journey to the summit, not just treading water in the top half.

Some transfers happen because a club can't say no to the fee. Some happen because the player forces a move. Newcastle must make sure neither applies here.

Bruno Guimarães is not just their best player. He is the symbol of what they are trying to become. Losing him now would set that project back years.

Keep him. Whatever it takes. Keep him.
