You may not have heard much about Johan Manzambi until recently. That is about to change very quickly.

Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth a reported €60 million with SC Freiburg for the 22-year-old winger — a move that represents one of the most exciting pieces of business any Premier League club has done this summer. And the fact that Newcastle United were also in for him, and that he chose Villa instead, tells you something about where Unai Emery's project stands in the wider European football landscape.

Who Is Johan Manzambi?

Born in Belgium to Congolese parents, Manzambi grew up in Liège before moving to Germany as a teenager to join Freiburg's renowned academy. It is a path that several European talents have taken — Freiburg are known for their development of young players, their structured approach, and their ability to make prospects into professionals before selling them on at a significant profit.

Manzambi spent four seasons in Freiburg's first team. In his final campaign — the 2025-26 Bundesliga season — he scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists in 34 appearances. For a wide player at a club that routinely finishes in the bottom half of the Bundesliga table, those are remarkable numbers.

He is predominantly left-footed, plays on the right side, and cuts inside — the classic profile that has become so valuable in modern football. He is quick, direct, technically clean, and — perhaps most importantly — capable of producing in big matches. When Freiburg played Bayern Munich in March, Manzambi scored and assisted in a 3-2 win that surprised everybody.

Why Villa and Not Newcastle?

Newcastle came in for Manzambi first. They offered Freiburg €52 million and offered the player wages that would have made him one of the highest earners at St. James' Park. He turned it down.

Reports from Germany suggest the player was drawn to Aston Villa's project — specifically the Champions League football they have qualified for, Unai Emery's coaching reputation, and the style of play Villa have developed. For a technically gifted winger who wants to grow, Emery's Villa is arguably a more appealing proposition than a Newcastle side that is still finding its identity.

The fee Villa eventually agreed — €60 million, rising to €70 million with add-ons — is a statement of intent from a club that has come a long way from the relegation battles of ten years ago.

What He Brings to Villa Park

Aston Villa lost pace and directness from the right after selling their previous wide forward, and Manzambi fills that void with room to spare. His ability to drift inside and shoot, his pressing intensity without the ball, and his capacity to create chances for himself — all of it fits what Emery demands from his wide players.

At 22, he also has his peak years ahead of him. If Villa can get him to the level they got Watkins, Coutinho at his best, and others — then €60 million will look like a bargain within 18 months.

Aston Villa are building something special. Johan Manzambi is the latest piece of that puzzle.
