Man Utd Eye Lewis Hall and Antonee Robinson as Left-Back Targets in Summer Window

Manchester United have a left-back problem — and they know it. With Tyrell Malacia having departed this summer and Luke Shaw entering the final year of his contract, Michael Carrick's first transfer window is already showing one urgent priority: sign a quality left-back. Two names have now emerged as genuine targets, with Newcastle United's Lewis Hall and Fulham's Antonee Robinson both firmly on United's radar.

Sky Sports News broke the story on June 11, confirming that Hall has been a player United have monitored for some time — and that interest is now intensifying as the summer window approaches. The 22-year-old left-back missed out on Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad, which could actually work in United's favour: without the distraction of tournament football, a deal could potentially be done early in the window.

Why Lewis Hall Makes Sense

The case for Hall is straightforward. He is young, British, and Premier League-proven — exactly the kind of profile that suits a club trying to build for the long term. Newcastle signed him from Chelsea two years ago for £28m, but his development since then has been impressive enough that United are willing to open talks. Newcastle, however, will not let him go cheaply and are expected to demand a significant fee.

Patrick Dorgu is already at Old Trafford and has been used more as a winger than a defender, while teenager Harry Amass could develop into something but is not yet ready for regular first-team minutes. Shaw, meanwhile, is 29 and entering the final year of his deal. The gap at the back left is real and needs addressing before Champions League football returns next season.

Robinson as the Alternative

Antonee Robinson has also emerged as a viable option. The USA international has been consistently excellent at Fulham over the past three seasons and has attracted previous interest from both Liverpool and Manchester City. At 28, he is a more experienced option, Premier League-proven, and currently on World Cup duty with the USMNT.

The question with Robinson is longevity. At a similar age to Shaw, United may be paying a significant transfer fee for a player they will need to replace in four or five years. Hall, by contrast, could grow into the position for the next decade. Sky Sports' analysis suggests Robinson may be the slightly safer short-term option statistically, but Hall has the higher ceiling.

Goalkeeper Also on the Agenda

Alongside the left-back hunt, United are also eyeing a back-up goalkeeper. Andre Onana — who spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor — is not expected to compete for the No 1 jersey and his future looks to be away from Old Trafford. Altay Bayindir is also likely to leave, leaving Senne Lammens as the established first choice and a new deputy required to support him.

Radek Vitek, despite a strong loan at Bristol City last season, is expected to be sold. Michael Carrick's first summer at United looks set to be a busy one — reinforcing the spine of the squad while continuing to develop the young talent already through the door.

What Comes Next

The summer transfer window officially opens on June 15. United's business is not expected to be flashy — Carrick has consistently spoken about smart recruitment and building from within — but the left-back position could be the one area where they move quickly. Both Hall and Robinson are understood to be open to a move if the right offer arrives.

For Hall in particular, a transfer to Old Trafford would represent the next logical step in a career that is quietly on the rise. His omission from the World Cup squad hurt, but sometimes the best response to a setback is the move that defines your career.
