Eight years. That is how long Andrew Robertson gave to Liverpool — eight years of defending left backs, overlapping runs, assists from positions that defenders are not supposed to reach, and a level of consistency that only the very best full backs in the world sustain across the length of a career. Now, according to reports from multiple outlets on Tuesday morning, Robertson is set to leave Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur in a move that will surprise many but makes more sense than it initially appears.

Why Liverpool Are Letting Him Go

Robertson turned 30 in March and Liverpool have been building towards a tactical evolution that slightly diminishes the role of the traditional overlapping full back. The arrival of younger options and the development of a more fluid defensive structure under their current coaching staff has meant that Robertson's game time has gradually reduced. Liverpool are not pushing him out — they have been clear that the decision has been mutual — but when Tottenham came in with a genuine offer and Robertson understood that his chances of regular football at Anfield were going to become more limited over the next two seasons, the decision made itself. Liverpool will reportedly receive around £12 million, a fee that reflects both his age and the final year remaining on his contract.

What Robertson Gives Tottenham

Tottenham have been looking for a left back for two summers. Their current options at left back have not convinced the coaching staff, and Robertson — even at 30 — brings a level of experience, leadership and technical quality that Tottenham's squad genuinely lacks. He is a Champions League winner. He is a Premier League title winner. He is a player who has performed at the highest level for a sustained period, and in a Tottenham dressing room that has had its problems with consistency and mentality, those things matter. Ange Postecoglou has been clear that he wants players who have won things and who bring standards with them every single day. Robertson fits that brief.

The Scotland Connection and What Comes Next

Robertson will continue as Scotland captain regardless of his club situation, and his move to London actually makes certain logistical aspects of the international setup simpler. For Tottenham, this is the kind of signing that does not generate enormous headlines but solves a real problem at a manageable cost. For Robertson, it is the chance to show that he still has two or three high-level seasons left in him at a club with genuine European ambitions. The transfer is expected to be confirmed before the end of the week.
