Mainoo Wins It for United in Premier League Classic
Old Trafford has seen plenty of famous nights, but there was something beautifully appropriate about this one. Manchester United came from behind to beat Liverpool 3-2 on May 3, with Kobbie Mainoo — the academy product who was practically written off by some at the start of the season — delivering the winning goal with 13 minutes to play. It confirmed United's return to the Champions League for the first time in two years.
How the Goals Fell
United wasted no time setting the tone. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in just the sixth minute, latching onto a neat through ball from Mason Mount before finishing low past Caoimhin Kelleher. Eight minutes later it was 2-0, Benjamin Sesko heading home powerfully from a Diogo Dalot cross. Old Trafford was rocking.
Liverpool composed themselves in the second half. Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back almost immediately after the restart, and Cody Gakpo levelled matters on 56 minutes with a fine individual effort. With the momentum shifting ominously, it looked as though Liverpool might pinch all three points. Instead, Mainoo intervened.
The midfielder received the ball 25 yards out, took one touch to set himself, and drove a right-footed effort into the bottom corner. André Onana barely moved. The goal drew scenes of genuine delirium — from the stands, from Mainoo's teammates, from manager Michael Carrick on the touchline.
Carrick's Case for the Job
Appointed on an interim basis after Ruben Amorim's departure in January, Carrick has overseen a remarkable turnaround. United had won three of their previous 18 league games when he took charge. Since then, results and performances have improved markedly, and a Champions League finish — plus a second double over Liverpool in the same season for the first time since 2016 — makes a compelling argument for giving him the job permanently.
United's final positions — third in the Premier League — would have seemed unthinkable in January. Carrick deserves enormous credit for steadying a ship that was taking on water at a frightening rate.
Liverpool's Collapse
For Liverpool, the defeat rounded off a difficult week. Mohamed Salah's departure this summer was confirmed, and now they have failed to secure a top-two finish that would have guaranteed direct Champions League seeding. Arne Slot has work to do.
