Stones Bids Farewell After Trophy-Laden Decade

John Stones has confirmed he will leave Manchester City when his contract expires in June, ending a partnership with Pep Guardiola that produced some of the most extraordinary football English club football has ever witnessed. The England centre-back joined City from Everton in 2016 as Guardiola's second signing and departs having collected 19 major trophies — a haul that will take some beating.

A Player Reinvented

When Stones arrived at the Etihad for £47.5 million, the knock on him was that he was too comfortable in possession and not reliable enough under pressure. Guardiola turned those perceived weaknesses into strengths and then went further — transforming Stones into something football had never quite seen before: a centre-back who could operate as a deep-lying midfielder, sitting between the defensive lines to create overloads in midfield and manipulate opposition pressing traps.

The 2022-23 season, when City won the treble, represented the absolute peak of that evolution. Stones was arguably their most important player in the Champions League run, providing a tactical flexibility that no other player in the squad could replicate. Injuries in the last two seasons cut short his time in that role, and City eventually decided against offering a renewal.

What's Next for Stones

The 32-year-old has been linked with Bayern Munich and Juventus, and he has indicated he will wait until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup — hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer — before deciding his next destination. England manager will be grateful to have him available for that tournament.

Hugo Viana, City's new sporting director, is reshaping the squad significantly. Bernardo Silva also departed on a free transfer this summer after failing to agree an extension. The era of Guardiola's original nucleus is drawing rapidly to a close.

The Trophy Cabinet

In 293 appearances for City, Stones helped the club win six Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups, five Carabao Cups, three Community Shields, one FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Super Cup. He also became a European Championship winner with England at Euro 2024. Not bad for a centre-back from Barnsley.
