Jose Mourinho's return to Real Madrid is confirmed in all but name. He has signed a two-year contract and was expected to be unveiled this week. The hold-up is the presidential election at the Bernabeu on June 7.

The Contract Is Signed

The Athletic and Spanish outlets confirm Mourinho signed a deal until June 2028 with an automatic extension if he wins La Liga. Real Madrid agreed to pay Benfica up to 6 million euros. Everything was in place for an announcement until the contested presidential race prompted the club to delay until after the vote is settled.

Perez vs Riquelme

Florentino Perez is the strong favourite to retain the Bernabeu presidency on June 7. His challenger Enrique Riquelme has stated he was never a fan of Mourinho and prefers a younger coach with a long-term vision. A Riquelme upset is unlikely but would derail the appointment.

A Second Chapter

Mourinho's first stint at Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 ended in acrimony. Thirteen years on, he hopes the second chapter ends better. The June 7 vote is the only remaining obstacle. By June 8, everything should be clear.
