Casemiro has confirmed he is leaving Manchester United. After 159 appearances, four years, and a contract worth north of £350,000 a week, the Brazilian midfielder made it official this week: his cycle at Old Trafford is over, his deal expires in June, and he will not be signing an extension. At 34, he is heading for the exit with Inter Miami the most likely destination, after talks between the MLS club and Casemiro's representatives were described by sources close to the situation as firmly positive. One of the most decorated defensive midfielders of his generation is off to Florida, and United's next chapter begins without him.

A Career at United That Started in Promise and Ended in Frustration

United paid Real Madrid in the region of €70 million for Casemiro in the summer of 2022, which was an enormous fee for a 30-year-old holding midfielder even at that stage of the market. The early signs were genuinely encouraging. He stabilised a United midfield that had been leaking for years, brought Champions League know-how, and his physicality and reading of the game gave Erik ten Hag a platform he had been crying out for. The problem was that the rest of the squad never cohered around him in the way that was promised, and as results dipped and managers came and went — ten Hag was sacked, Amorim arrived and was sacked in January — Casemiro found himself associated with a period of institutional chaos he could do very little about on his own.

The Inter Miami Move Makes Sense

At 34, Casemiro is not interested in rebuilding projects. He has won everything there is to win in European football — five Champions Leagues, a World Cup runner-up medal, three La Liga titles — and what he wants now is a comfortable, lucrative exit from the top level on his own terms. Inter Miami offers exactly that. The MLS club, co-owned by David Beckham, have been assembling a collection of prestigious names and the profile fits perfectly. He will earn well, play regularly without the physical demands of competing for a top-six Premier League place, and retire from the game's elite level with his legacy properly intact. Whether United feel they got value from the deal is a different conversation entirely.

United Must Now Find a Different Answer in Midfield

The departure opens a significant question for Michael Carrick, who looks increasingly likely to be confirmed as United's permanent manager before the summer. Casemiro's role — breaking up play, protecting the back four, winning the ball back quickly — was never really replicated elsewhere in the squad. The club will need a midfield signing of some quality this summer to address it, and with Champions League football confirmed for 2026-27, they should be able to attract one. Several names have been mentioned in connection with United already, including Brighton's Mats Wieffer and Atalanta's Éderson. Whoever comes in will inherit a different environment to the one Casemiro walked into. Whether it is a better one will depend on what Carrick and INEOS build around him in the coming weeks.

Transfer context: Casemiro, 34, joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in August 2022 for approx. €70.65m. His contract expires June 30, 2026. He made 159 appearances and scored 26 goals for the club. Inter Miami are in advanced talks to sign him on a free transfer.
