Saka Pounces to Send Arsenal Into Budapest

Twenty years after their only previous Champions League final appearance ended in heartbreak against Barcelona, Arsenal are going back. Bukayo Saka's decisive strike just before half-time secured a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Emirates on Tuesday night, completing a 2-1 aggregate victory that sends Mikel Arteta's side to the Puskas Arena in Budapest on May 30.

How the Goal Happened

It was typical of Saka — right place, right moment. Leandro Trossard's speculative effort from the edge of the box was palmed away by Jan Oblak, but the ball fell kindly to Arsenal's captain, who swept home from close range in the 44th minute. The Emirates erupted. From that point, Atletico — who needed to score twice to go through — looked utterly deflated.

Oblak had been the busier goalkeeper throughout, particularly in the first half, where Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard both forced sharp saves. Atletico's best chance fell to Alexander Sørloth, who headed wide from a Rodrigo De Paul cross in the 68th minute. It was as close as Diego Simeone's side came.

The Bigger Picture for Arteta

For Arteta, this moment has been years in the making. Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League twice in the last three seasons, beaten by Manchester City and then Liverpool. Winning the Champions League — a competition the club has never claimed — would represent the crowning achievement of his tenure. The squad he has assembled, built on the pace and directness of Saka, Martinelli and Odegaard, is tailor-made for knockout football.

Arsenal will face either PSG or Bayern Munich in Budapest, with the second leg of that semi-final taking place later tonight at the Allianz Arena. PSG lead 5-4 on aggregate after a breathless first leg in Paris.

Atletico's Limitations Exposed

It was the third time in four seasons that Atletico Madrid have exited the Champions League at the semi-final stage, and their struggles in the final third were painfully apparent. Simeone set up to frustrate, which they did well enough for long stretches, but when Oblak had to make three or four top-drawer saves in a single half, it was always going to be a matter of when rather than if Arsenal scored. The holders of that goal — of this entire run — is Saka. He has eight goals and six assists in this Champions League campaign alone.
