Trent Alexander-Arnold went to Real Madrid to be their right-back. Seventeen months on he is behind two players in that position, and one of them is a midfielder. Jose Mourinho has been picking Fede Valverde there, with Denzel Dumfries, signed from Inter Milan in the summer, ahead of the Englishman as well.
The numbers are stark enough on their own. Alexander-Arnold has appeared in seven of Real's 13 matches this season, started four of them and registered one assist, in a 4-0 home win over Malaga. The trend over the last month is worse than the headline figure: he did not play against Roma, Sevilla or RB Leipzig, and in the Clasico he came on in stoppage time.
How it got to this
Real wanted him badly. They paid 10m euros (£8.33m) last summer to get him out of his Liverpool contract early so he could play at the Club World Cup, rather than simply waiting for him to become free. He arrived, gave his first speech in Spanish, called it a dream come true, and looked like the long-term answer to the Dani Carvajal question.
Then the first season went wrong in the way first seasons often do. A hamstring problem in September and a thigh injury in December broke up his campaign, after a muscle issue had already interrupted pre-season. He made 21 of a possible 38 La Liga appearances, 14 of them starts. Around him the club was changing managers, with Xabi Alonso leaving and Alvaro Arbeloa coming in, and neither spell produced much consistency for anyone.
Mourinho says it hurts, and picks Valverde anyway
Mourinho has not pretended the situation is comfortable. "First of all, it hurts me. I don't like to make players feel bad," he said. "Obviously, when you build a squad with two players per position as your foundation and then have a third player take the field, that's something I don't like. But there are things that are more important than these feelings."
He went on to explain the decision as a midfield one rather than a defensive one, saying he moved Valverde back for the balance of the team and that both Alexander-Arnold and Dumfries accepted the explanation. Back in August, at his first news conference, Mourinho had made a point of saying it was not possible for one of the two to play 60 games and the other none. In September he used Alexander-Arnold in central midfield against Inter when suspensions thinned his options, and said afterwards the player had interpreted the role well.
Versatility is a compliment managers pay to players they are not sure where to put.
Liverpool, England, and the next three weeks
Jamie Carragher, speaking on The Overlap, said he would take him back at Liverpool. "He would get a lot of criticism, because I think he made a mistake. I think he made a big mistake going to Madrid. We've definitely missed his creativity." Carragher also made the obvious point about being third choice: when a club is playing a midfielder ahead of you, they want you to move on.
He is 28 now and under contract until 2031, so Real hold every card in any January conversation. The more immediate deadline is Thomas Tuchel's England squad, announced on 6 November for the Nations League games against Croatia and Spain. Alexander-Arnold was recalled in September after an absence stretching back to June 2025. Three club matches stand between now and that announcement, two in the league and one in the Champions League, and he will need minutes in them.
Transfer context: Trent Alexander-Arnold, 28, joined Real Madrid from Liverpool in June 2025 for 10m euros (£8.33m) in early-release compensation. His contract runs to 2031. This season: seven appearances, four starts, one assist in 13 Real Madrid matches.
