Three days after losing the Milan derby 3-1 and seeing their unbeaten Serie A start end, Inter needed a clean night. They got one. A 3-0 win at Feyenoord was comfortable, controlled and, for Djed Spence, personal.
The England full-back left Tottenham for Inter in August, and the way this game went suggests he is settling nicely into Italian football. He had a hand in two of the three goals.
Bisseck's curler and Esposito's header
Inter went ahead inside eight minutes. Spence played Yann Bisseck in, and the defender curled a sublime finish in from the edge of the box. It was the sort of strike you rarely expect from a centre-back, and it set the tone for an evening that Feyenoord never really recovered from.
The second came in the 34th minute and again had Spence's fingerprints on it. His shot took a deflection, Pio Esposito pounced on the loose ball and headed it home from close range. Two goals before the break, and Inter's grip on the game was firm.
Zielinski seals it
The third was the best of the lot. Piotr Zielinski darted across the Feyenoord box and bent a brilliant strike beyond goalkeeper Tjark Ernst. Esposito thought he had his second of the night when he tapped in from six yards, but the flag went up for offside and the goal was ruled out.
That was as close as the home side got to anything resembling a reaction. Feyenoord looked well short of the ideas needed to trouble the visitors.
Where both sides stand now
Inter had taken only three points from their first three Champions League matches, so this was a much-needed win. They are 14th in the league-phase table on six points, which is not yet comfortable but is a step in the right direction.
Feyenoord are in real trouble. They sit 30th on three points after four games and now face a battle just to reach the play-offs. They welcome Porto on Tuesday 24 November, with Inter hosting Stuttgart the following day.
