Raphinha Double Ends Aston Villa's Perfect Champions League Start

For about forty-five minutes at the Spotify Nou Camp, Aston Villa looked like a side who could win there. They were a goal down by then, through their own carelessness, and they still kept coming. Then Raphinha scored twice inside a quarter of an hour after the restart and the argument was over. Barcelona won 3-0, took second place in the league phase table off Villa, and ended their visitors' perfect start to the competition.

The opening goal was a gift. Joao Gomes, under no particular pressure, hurried a pass across his own box and Lamine Yamal curled it in from the edge of the area in the seventh minute. It was his 13th goal in 15 games. Unai Emery, who had turned 55 that day, did not blame him afterwards. "We are working for years together and we made mistakes like that but we have always overcome those mistakes," he said.

The half-hour Villa will think about

What followed was the part Emery will replay. Barcelona were without Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia and Xavi Espart, which left 20-year-old Brian Farinas making a Champions League debut in only his second start at right-back. The hosts had gone 18 European games without a clean sheet, stretching back to April 2025. Villa knew all of this and went at them.

Matty Cash arrowed a volley not long after the goal. Victor Lindelof had a shot deflected behind. Johan Manzambi scuffed one wide and then forced Joan Garcia into a save. In driving rain, the Premier League side matched the Spanish champions for long stretches and finished the half with nothing to show for it, which in this stadium is usually the end of the story.

Raphinha settles it

Seven minutes after the break, Raphinha's low shot clipped Pau Torres on its way through and wrong-footed Zion Suzuki. Torres had already made one outstanding last-ditch tackle on the same player. In the 64th minute Joao Cancelo worked space on the left and picked out Raphinha for a close-range third that was a lot more deliberate than the second. The Brazilian now has 20 goals for club and country this season and was comfortably the best player on the pitch.

Suzuki then denied Anthony Gordon a fourth, and Leon Goretzka's header glanced off the post as Villa chased a consolation that never came. Barcelona, who have won 13 of their 15 matches this season, finally got their first European shutout in a year and a half.

Where this leaves Emery

His record at this ground is now 15 defeats in 16 visits, and three wins in 31 attempts against Barcelona in all. The worst of it remains the 6-1 that ended a 4-0 first-leg lead when he was at Paris St-Germain, nine years ago. Asked about it the day before, he gave a short answer: "One more match. Just one more match."

He was more expansive about the performance. "The test was definitely not in the level we want to achieve but there are a lot of things to learn," he said. "We must be ruthless in the attacking third. 3-0 is maybe more than we deserved, but we accept the defeat." John McGinn, who was left trailing by Cancelo for the third goal and taken off soon after, called it a learning curve and pointed to the fact that Villa have been competitive against Bayern Munich and PSG as well.

Both of those things can be true. Villa arrived with wins over Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking and a belief that they belong on this stage, and they left having been beaten by three goals without ever being humiliated. Emery took over when the club sat three points above the relegation zone. A night like this is the price of having got them somewhere they can be judged against Barcelona at all. They go to Manchester United on Sunday.
