Some of the Villarreal supporters had gone home before the twentieth minute. It is hard to blame them. Paris St-Germain scored four times in the opening 17 minutes of this Champions League tie, and by the end the home side had been beaten 6-0 by a team that treated the night like a training exercise with better lighting.
It was Villarreal's own hands that did most of the damage. Every one of those early goals grew out of a mistake at the back, which makes the scoreline sound harsh on PSG's finishers when it is really a story about a side that kept trying to play out and kept getting punished for it.
Four mistakes, four goals
João Neves opened the scoring, drilling the ball in from close range after Villarreal had failed to deal with a corner. That was the only goal of the four that came from a set piece. The rest were gifts.
The second arrived almost at once. Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi tried to play out from the back and made a calamitous pass, PSG pounced and worked the ball to Désiré Doué, who fired it home. A minute later it happened again. Villarreal had possession snatched from them while building from deep, and Senny Mayulu drove a shot past Gulacsi to make it three.
The fourth goal came when PSG moved the ball back to Fabián Ruiz in the box, and the Spain midfielder drilled it inside the near post. Four goals, four different scorers, and not one of them needed a moment of real brilliance. That, more than the score, is what the home dressing room will have to sit with.
Ruiz adds a fifth, a teenager finishes it
There was no great second-half fightback to report. Ruiz made it five after the break with a lovely touch that left his marker on the floor before he tucked the ball past Gulacsi, which gave him two on the night.
The sixth went to 17-year-old David Boly, who surged up the flank and sent a shot in off the leg of a Villarreal defender. It was a deflected finish, but nobody in the away end was going to quibble. For a teenager getting minutes on this stage, it is the kind of goal that sticks in the memory whatever the replay shows.
What it means for both sides
PSG now sit top of the league-phase table on a perfect 12 points from four games. They have scored 20 goals in that time, and this attack has already put four past Barcelona and four past Manchester City earlier in the competition. Teams in this tournament will not enjoy seeing that name in their draw.
Villarreal are in a very different place. They have won only one of their games and now face a trip to Slavia Prague, while PSG host Roma on 25 November. On this evidence, the Spanish club have work to do on the way they build from their own box before they worry about anything else.
