Man Utd Eye Ait-Nouri, Barcelona Want Hincapie: Wednesday's Gossip

A left-back crossing Manchester is the sort of thing that usually gets filed under never going to happen, so Wednesday's papers earn their place. Manchester United are said to be weighing a move for Manchester City's Rayan Ait-Nouri, and the detail that makes it worth a second look is that personal terms are reportedly not an obstacle. The Algeria international is 25. The story comes from Florian Plettenberg rather than a back page, which is its own kind of recommendation.

Palace, Barcelona and the Arsenal captaincy

At Selhurst Park, the Mirror reports that England assistant manager Anthony Barry has emerged as a candidate should Crystal Palace decide to part with Pierre Sage. That is still a conditional, and Palace have not said anything to suggest the Frenchman is in immediate danger, but Barry's name appearing at all tells you how the club's season is being read from outside.

Barcelona, meanwhile, keep looking at the Premier League for defenders. Sport in Spain says Piero Hincapie, Arsenal's 24-year-old Ecuadorian centre-back, sits on sporting director Deco's list of targets. Further up the same team sheet, Caughtoffside reports that Bayern Munich are still monitoring Martin Odegaard while the 27-year-old Norwegian's next Arsenal contract remains unresolved. Two stories about the same club pulling in opposite directions, which is roughly what happens to any side sitting top of the table in November.

Old Trafford, from both ends

Talksport reports that Al-Hilal will not be offering Bruno Fernandes a route out of Manchester United this winter, despite coming close to signing the 32-year-old at the start of the season. That lands on the morning after Fernandes scored the penalty that started United's comeback against Roma and then spent his post-match interview complaining about what he called lies printed about his relationship with Michael Carrick.

The Daily Mail, behind its paywall, has Unai Emery on a five-man United shortlist to replace Carrick, with the caveat that the club's current sporting structure is thought not to suit the Spaniard. Emery was in the Nou Camp dugout on Tuesday watching his Villa side lose 3-0 and will bring them to Old Trafford on Sunday, which should make for a lively build-up whether or not there is anything in it.

Elsewhere

Tottenham will not sanction a sale of Lucas Bergvall, according to Football Insider, with Barcelona and Napoli both said to be interested in the 20-year-old Swede. Talksport has Minnesota United's Kelvin Yeboah, a 26-year-old forward and the nephew of former Leeds striker Tony Yeboah, on the radar of several Premier League clubs, with Everton, Crystal Palace and Sunderland all looking for a striker.

And the Telegraph carries the most quietly damaging line of the morning: Newcastle's players believe the gambles the club took in the summer transfer market are the main reason for how this season has gone. Nobody is named. After one win in five home league games, nobody needs to be.
