London City Lionesses did almost everything right at Hayes Lane on Sunday except score enough goals, and Manchester City made them pay. The defending champions won 2-1 in a Women's Super League game that swung on two moments of quality from a side that had spent long stretches chasing shadows.
A first half City barely survived
The home side were on City's back line within 30 seconds, and the pressure hardly let up for the rest of the half. By the break London City had taken 12 shots, nine of them from inside the box, yet only two had troubled the keeper. Chances fell to Jana Fernandez, Danielle van de Donk, Izzy Goodwin, Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani, and none of them found the net.
The save of the afternoon came from the home goalkeeper. Mary Earps, handed her first league start for the club, pushed Rebecca Knaak's header onto the post and then clawed the rebound off the line after Grace Geyoro had squandered one of the clearest openings. City were hanging on, and everyone in the ground knew it.
Shaw and Hemp turn the game
Football has a habit of punishing the team that cannot finish, and the second half followed the script. Lauren Hemp threaded one piercing pass through the London City defence, Khadija Shaw ran onto it, waited for Earps to come off her line and rounded her before firing into the roof of the net. It was City's first real attack in a long time and it put them in front against the run of play.
London City answered well. A corner from the left found Fernandez, who flicked a header into the far corner to level things up, and the home crowd got the reward its team had been building towards. It lasted two minutes. Mary Fowler delivered a cross from the right and Hemp diverted it in to restore City's lead, the goal that ultimately decided the match. Shaw had also hit the post in between, which says plenty about how open it became.
What it tells us about both sides
For London City this was a defeat with a silver lining. Eder Maestre's team were the better side for long periods, they matched the champions physically, and the performance suggests they are closer to the top end of the table than many expected at the start of the season. The lesson is a familiar one, though: a team that misses that many chances against elite opposition will usually lose.
City are unbeaten in all competitions and Shaw has now scored nine WSL goals this season, but this was not comfortable. They have drawn all three of their Women's Champions League games, followed league draws against Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, and looked stretched at the back again here. Andree Jeglertz will be pleased with the response after the equaliser and slightly less pleased with how much they needed their forwards to rescue it. Hemp was named player of the match.
