Thursday's papers put Unai Emery at the top of the pile, and for once the story is about a manager staying put rather than leaving. The Telegraph reports that Aston Villa are in advanced talks with Emery over a new contract, which follows a fortnight in which his name kept appearing on lists of possible Manchester United targets.

Villa have done well out of continuity. They would rather not test the alternative. The timing is no accident either, coming days after a chastening night at Barcelona.

Liverpool have three stories running at once

The Athletic says Trey Nyoni, 19, is expected to sign a new deal at Anfield after Nottingham Forest had a £30m offer for the England youth midfielder rejected in the summer. That is a lot of money for a teenager. Turning it down tells you plenty.

At the other end of the career curve, Sport Witness reports that Flamengo are interested in Alisson Becker, who is 34 and out of contract at Anfield in June. A return to Brazil has an obvious logic to it. Meanwhile Football Insider claims Leeds United could sign Harvey Elliott permanently in January, with Valencia preparing to cut short the 23-year-old's loan.

Strikers, midfielders and one Spaniard at Como

Everton are looking at Vitor Roque, the 21-year-old Brazilian at Palmeiras, who Sport in Spain says carries a price tag of roughly £42m. Teamtalk has Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea all watching Galatasaray's 21-year-old Russian midfielder Aleksey Batrakov, and the same outlet links United with Jacobo Ramon, the 21-year-old Spanish defender at Como, where Chelsea are said to be circling too. Given the night Como have just had in France, the queue for their players is only going to get longer.

One that looks dead: Sport says Barcelona are now unlikely to sign Federico Dimarco, because Inter have activated a one-year extension on the 28-year-old's contract.

Benitez wants back in, Newcastle want answers

Talksport reports that Rafa Benitez is looking for a route back into Premier League management. He has been out of the English game for a while now, and the list of clubs who might fancy his particular brand of structure is probably shorter than it was.

And the Mail carries the least comfortable line of the morning for Newcastle: their players are said to be "confused" about what Matthias Jaissle actually wants from them. That is the kind of brief that tends to appear shortly before something gives.
