Ten games without a win, six changes to the team, and a crowd that had already made its feelings clear by half-time. John Eustace walked down the Pride Park tunnel on Friday night with his job looking about as safe as anybody's does in that situation. Four minutes into the second half, Derby County were level. By the final whistle they had won 3-1, and the question had changed shape entirely.
A first half that went the way the last ten had
Bolton Wanderers were the better side before the interval and deserved the lead Ruben Rodrigues gave them on 42 minutes, slotting home first time from Gaizka Larrazabal's cut-back. The Spaniard had been pulling Derby's back line apart down the right all half. He had already set Xavier Simons up for a chance the midfielder blazed over from 15 yards, and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom had to deny Chris Forino at the back post before the goal arrived.
Shane Duffy was making his Derby debut a week after joining, one of six changes Eustace made from the side beaten 4-0 at home by Norwich on Tuesday. The 34-year-old's experience was badly needed in a defence wrecked by injuries. It did not stop Larrazabal. The boos at the break were not subtle.
Two goals in four minutes
Ryan Nyambe scored on 46 minutes. It was his first goal in 311 games, a tap-in at the back post after Carlton Morris worked the ball across and Mo Fuseini's attempted flick rolled kindly into the 28-year-old's path. Three minutes later Morris was the architect again, heading the ball across goal for Jack Robinson to glance in.
Zetterstrom then did what he did for most of last season, when his form earned him a World Cup place with Sweden. He kept out Larrazabal, then Sam Dalby, with Bolton pressing for a leveller. At the other end Jack Bonham denied Fuseini a third on 54 minutes. It stayed 2-1 until the 94th, when Rhian Brewster robbed Larrazabal, ran clear and finished hard for Derby's second Championship win of the season.
Relief at one end, familiar frustration at the other
"I'm very proud," Eustace told BBC Radio Derby. "Going 1-0 down just before half-time and going in, it could have been very different. But the group stuck together and came out in the second half and showed fighting spirit and togetherness." He called it relief as much as anything, and added the obvious caveat: "there is so much hard work ahead." The win does not lift Derby out of the relegation places.
Steven Schumacher sounded like a man who has had this conversation before. "If you are the home team and the away team has taken control of the first 45 minutes, like we did and got ourselves in front and had big chances, you are obviously going to go into your dressing room to say we need a reaction now," the Bolton manager told BBC Sport. "But what really gives them a lifeline is if you switch off in the first minute and you don't track a runner and somebody taps the ball in from a yard out." He pointed to the defeat at Bristol City last Saturday as the same wound. "It hurts and it stings, but that's football."
