Elye Wahi scored a hat-trick for Nice, two of them from the penalty spot, as his side beat Rennes 5-2 in Ligue 1 on Friday night. It was a busy, noisy game with seven goals, two spot-kicks scored in the first half alone and a lead that was never really in danger after the interval.
Rennes made the better start in one sense, because Wahi's first goal came from a penalty in the 12th minute and still did not stop them from scoring next. S. Szymanski equalised in the 15th minute from an A. Nagida pass. That was as good as it got for the visitors for a long while.
Two penalties put Nice in control
Wahi converted again from the spot in the 34th minute, and Nice went in at the break with more than a one-goal cushion. Just before half-time, in the 45th minute plus two of added time, J. Clauss made it 3-1 with Wahi supplying the pass. A striker who scores twice and then creates a goal inside one half is hard to mark, penalties or not.
Amoura and a third for Wahi
M. Amoura added the fourth in the 52nd minute, set up by S. Diop, and the game looked done. B. Dia pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 58th minute to make it 4-2, which gave Rennes a flicker of hope. Wahi ended that in the 73rd minute, with G. Hein providing the final pass, for his third of the night and Nice's fifth.
What it means for both sides
For Nice, five goals at home and a striker in form is the best kind of Friday. For Rennes, two goals away from home should be a decent return, yet conceding five and giving away two penalties before half-time is a problem that no amount of attacking will fix.
