Tottenham finally have a Premier League win. It took until the seventh game of the season and until the sixth minute of stoppage time, but substitute Ben Davies drove a low shot into the net to seal a 3-1 victory over Coventry and send a nervous Tottenham Hotspur Stadium into relieved celebration. Spurs began the night bottom of the table and as the only side without a win. They finished it 16th.
Maddison marks his return
The opening goal came after 14 minutes, and it belonged to James Maddison. This was his first Premier League start of the season and his first Spurs start since May 2025, and he marked it in the best possible way. Mohammed Kudus knocked the ball past Jay Dasilva, cut it back, and Maddison hit a first-time shot into the net from just outside the box. BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty described a gasp around the stadium as the goal was replayed on the big screens and Maddison stood there beaming.
He did not last the whole game. Maddison was replaced by Conor Gallagher with a standing ovation ringing around the ground, which told its own story about how much the home supporters had missed him.
Rudoni levels, Marmoush restores the lead
Coventry, promoted this season and already winners twice, did not fold. Jack Rudoni equalised four minutes into the second half, in the 49th minute, with the goal created by Brandon Thomas-Asante. Frank Lampard had said before kick-off that his side would play with the same purpose they showed against Newcastle, and for a while it looked as though that belief might earn a draw.
Spurs found the response within nine minutes. Omar Marmoush put them back in front in the 58th minute, with Andy Robertson supplying the assist. After that the game turned anxious. Robertson limped off and was replaced by Ben Davies, and Tosin Adarabioyo also had to leave through injury, with Mateus Fernandes coming on. Coventry pushed, and eight minutes of stoppage time were announced.
Davies settles it
The third goal, in the sixth minute of added time, came from the man who had replaced the limping Robertson. Dominic Solanke provided the pass, Coventry struggled to clear their lines, and Davies stepped in to place a low strike into the net. Former Arsenal forward Alan Smith said on Sky Sports that Davies looked as shocked as anyone in the south stand when it went in.
For Spurs, the relief is bigger than the margin. The goals came from Maddison, Marmoush and a substitute, and the three points lift them out of the bottom three. For Coventry, who had gone into the evening with two wins, the long trip home will feel like a missed chance. They had done enough to get back into the game and not quite enough to hold on once Spurs found their second gear.
