Bayer Leverkusen had the game won before Lech Poznan had settled into it. Three goals inside 12 minutes of the first half, two of them penalties, put the visitors 3-0 up at the break, and a fourth late on made it 4-0. For Lech it was a second heavy defeat in this competition.

Schick from the spot, twice

Patrik Schick opened the scoring from a penalty in the 29th minute. Three minutes later Malik Tillman made it 2-0 in the 32nd, and Leverkusen were firmly in control. In the 41st minute there was another penalty, and Schick took it too, which meant the visitors went in at half-time leading 3-0 and with the points all but secured.

Schick finishing both penalties is the headline, but the shape of the half mattered as much. Leverkusen scored three times in the space of 12 minutes, and Lech never found a way to slow them down.

A late fourth, and a save from Lis

The second half was quieter. Afonso Moreira had a right-footed shot from the left side of the box saved by goalkeeper Mateusz Lis in the 83rd minute, with the chance set up by Tillman. Moreira then had a hand in the final goal. In the 88th minute he provided the assist for Maza, who scored the fourth to complete the 4-0 win.

Lech's night will be remembered for how little they managed to do after falling behind. They did not score, and goalkeeper Lis was left to do what he could against a side that kept finding space in the penalty area.

A rough start for Lech

This was not the first time Lech have conceded four in this competition. Crystal Palace beat them 4-0 on matchday one, so the Polish side have lost both league-phase games by that scoreline and have yet to score. That is eight goals conceded and none scored in two matches. Leverkusen, in contrast, have started their league phase with a convincing away win and a scorer in Schick who needed only one half to put it beyond doubt.
