Mikel Arteta did not dress it up. Bukayo Saka's quad injury, picked up in Arsenal's 2-2 Champions League draw at Bayern Munich, "does not look good at all", and that one sentence was enough to make every Arsenal supporter wince. The winger pulled up in the 10th minute at the Allianz Arena while trying to play a pass, with nobody within yards of him, and Eberechi Eze came on in his place.
What Arteta said after the game
Speaking to TNT Sports, Arteta admitted the staff were worried. A player who has to leave the pitch with a sharp pain, he said, is never good news, and for now Arsenal simply have to wait and see. There is no scan result and no timescale, which is why the mood around the club on Thursday is cautious rather than panicked. Saka is 25 and has four goals in 11 appearances in all competitions this season, so the numbers say he was already in the middle of a decent run.
A body that keeps sending warnings
The frustrating part is the pattern. Saka picked up an Achilles problem in March that cost him the March international break and seven Arsenal games, and he got back in time to help the club win the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. He started the Champions League final defeat by Paris St-Germain but was taken off after 54 minutes. At the World Cup he started only three of England's eight games, though one of them was the 6-4 third-place win over France, where he scored a hat-trick.
Before that came hamstring surgery after an injury in December 2024, which kept him out for 101 days. Even last season's title run was stop-start: he pulled out of the warm-up against Leeds in January with a hip problem and a hamstring issue cost him about four weeks. Despite all that he still made 49 appearances. Arsenal win more often with him in the side, and that gap is hard to ignore.
Who steps in on the wings
The early signs from Munich were encouraging. Noni Madueke started on the left, switched to the right when Saka went off, and looked sharp. Eze then scored the opening goal from the left. Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha said Arsenal would miss Saka's star power but were not short of wide players who could do the job while he recovers. Summer signing Christos Tzolis is the obvious extra option, though he is currently out with a hamstring injury of his own, and 16-year-old Max Dowman is there as a youngster who has already scored in the Premier League.
Arteta singled out Eze, praising his energy and his work without the ball, and said the players who came on gave the team the different tools it needed. Arsenal had more possession than Bayern even before the injury and finished the night unhappy to leave with a point after Declan Rice's late equaliser.
Why the scan result matters
This is our own view, not the club's: a short layoff is something Arsenal can absorb with the squad they have built over the last two summers. A long one is a different matter, because Saka is the player who makes their right side dangerous, and the calendar is only getting busier. Everything now depends on what the scan shows.
