It took Max Dowman about a minute to make himself useful for England's Under-19s on Friday, and a little over an hour to undo some of the good work. The Arsenal teenager set up the opening goal in the first minute, then walked off with a straight red card in the 74th.

England still won 2-1 against the United States in Marbella, in a game played behind closed doors. Dowman's assist went to Reigan Heskey, who scored almost immediately, and Ben Futcher's side held on with ten men.

What we know about the red card

Not a great deal, officially. The exact reason for the dismissal has not been confirmed. The Sun reports he was penalised for violent conduct, but that remains a report rather than a ruling, and it is worth treating that way until England or the referee say more.

What is clear is that it was an unusual afternoon for a player who has spent the last year being talked about for very different reasons. Goal describes it as a harsh lesson after an impressive start to the season at club level.

A rapid rise at Arsenal

Dowman has made two appearances and scored twice for Arsenal this term, and he has sat on the bench several other times. He only finished his GCSEs in the summer, yet he already owns a Premier League winners' medal from last season's title.

That kind of progress inevitably creates noise, and some supporters have been asking for him to be fast-tracked through the England age groups. The Under-21 manager, Lee Carsley, has pushed back gently. Dowman is an outstanding talent, he said, and the move up to the Under-21s is inevitable, but it has to come at the right time. The goal is for these players to play for the senior side for a long period, so the timing matters.

Carsley's Nwaneri comparison

Carsley pointed to Ethan Nwaneri as a similar case a few years ago. Nwaneri arrived early, made his debut and has done really well, but Carsley noted the tendency to push such players on quickly. His message was simple: players develop at their own pace.

The red card does not change that argument. If anything, it is a small reminder that being brilliant at 16 and being fully formed are two different things. England face Belgium on Monday, and Goal says it is unclear whether Dowman will be involved after the dismissal.
