Liverpool have reportedly been told that £60m (€71m) could be enough to sign Barcelona defender Jules Kounde. The claim comes from Football Insider, and it points to a big change in the status of a player who once looked untouchable at Camp Nou.
Treat it as gossip for now. Goal reports that no formal negotiations have taken place between Liverpool and Barcelona.
Why Kounde might be available
The 27-year-old has played in just four La Liga matches this season and was an unused substitute in Barcelona's last three league fixtures. Under Hansi Flick his role has shrunk, and a clear asking price suggests Barcelona are open to a deal.
Money plays a part too. Barcelona's well-documented financial and salary constraints make a defender who is not playing a natural candidate to be sold. Kounde joined from Sevilla in 2022 and has made 193 appearances. He can play at right-back or centre-back, which makes him attractive to plenty of clubs.
The Liverpool problem
Liverpool have real questions on the right side of defence. Conor Bradley is reportedly set to be out until next year with an injury, and Jeremie Frimpong has struggled to make a convincing impact. Ronald Araujo arrived on loan from Barcelona in the summer, but Liverpool have not decided on his long-term future.
Joe Gomez could also leave at the end of the season, so reinforcements look necessary. The question is whether £60m is the smartest way to spend. Kounde would solve more than one problem because he can cover right-back or centre-back.
What to watch
Nothing is close. The report says Liverpool have been placed on alert, not that a bid is in.
The January window will tell us more. If Kounde keeps sitting on the bench and Barcelona need to balance the books, a price of £60m will be tested. For now, the story is a fair snapshot of how quickly standings change under Flick.
