Paying £40m up front for a 24-year-old goalkeeper invites questions. Daniel Farke, the man who was so keen to sign him, says the answer is arriving week by week. After James Trafford kept Sunderland out in a 0-0 draw, the Leeds United manager went further than most would and said the goalkeeper can one day be England's No. 1.
The Saves That Earned A Point
Leeds left the Stadium of Light with a clean sheet, and Trafford was the reason. Brian Brobbey tested him twice in the first half and he was equal to both. After the break, with Sunderland pressing hard, he stayed switched on and denied Nilson Angulo. Sunderland were desperate to climb off the bottom of the table, and for long periods Leeds had to hold on.
Farke wasn't dazzled, which is rather the point. "I wouldn't say there was an unbelievable, world class save, but several good saves and he has shown also today why we were so desperate to sign him," he said, as quoted by ESPN. He added that Trafford's "natural belief and skills, his aura and confidence" lift the players in front of him.
Farke's Bold Prediction
Then came the line that will travel. "Of course, he's for me the most promising young goalkeeper in the UK and he has all potential, more or less, to be also one day England's No. 1," Farke said. He kept one hand on the handbrake, though. Trafford has to show it with consistency, week in, week out, and Farke said he expects performances like this and nothing less.
A Big Fee, Still Being Justified
Trafford is a former Manchester City academy player who joined Leeds this summer in a deal worth an initial £40m, a figure that raised eyebrows among some observers. Farke says the spending was justified, both for the technical quality and for the security Trafford gives his back line. Leeds are in the top half of the Premier League after eight matches.
England's goalkeeping question isn't going away, and a keeper stopping clean sheets in a Premier League season is how you answer it. I'd say it's too early to crown him, but this is the kind of start that makes the argument for you.
