The Golden Boy race has a clear leader before it has really started. Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi, 19, tops the Golden Boy Index for 2026, and the shortlist of 25 contains plenty of names with a case to be chasing him. Desire Doue is the current holder of the award.
Why Cubarsi is the frontrunner
Cubarsi was named best young player at the 2026 World Cup and played a major part in Spain's victory. The report calls him sensational and the leading candidate. For a centre-back to lead an award that often goes to attackers says something about how complete his season has been.
How the index is built
The Golden Boy Index rests on three pillars: sporting performance, total minutes played and club strength, with bonuses for European and international achievements. It is a rule-based way of sorting a crowded field, and it explains why a Barcelona regular with a World Cup medal sits at the top.
The names chasing him
Manchester City's Ayyoub Bouaddi arrived in a 100 million euro transfer from Lille. Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi scored 13 goals in 33 appearances during his debut campaign there. Real Madrid have two on the list, Endrick and Yan Diomande, who produced 15 goals and 12 assists in 54 matches at RB Leipzig. Paris Saint-Germain are represented only by Warren Zaire-Emery.
The rest of the 25 includes Marc Bernal and Xavi Espart of Barcelona, Charalampos Kostoulas and Luka Vuskovic of Brighton, Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal, Jorrel Hato and Estevao of Chelsea, Kerim Alajbegovic of Juventus, Lennart Karl of Bayern Munich and Franco Mastantuono of Fiorentina, along with several others. It is a deep list, but on current evidence Cubarsi has the clearest path.
