Carrick Keeps Fernandes as United Captain Despite the Como Row

Michael Carrick has settled the captaincy question at Manchester United before anyone could properly ask it. Bruno Fernandes keeps the armband, and the head coach says the Portuguese is fully committed to a club that has not won in eight games and is running out of patience with almost everything.

The row that started it

The trouble began after United lost 4-1 to Como in the Champions League. Fernandes questioned the tactics in public, and Carrick answered by leaving him on the bench for Sunday's home game with Bournemouth, which United lost 3-0. A captain dropped for a home match after criticising the manager is not a situation any club wants to explain, and the weekend left Carrick's own future hanging by a thread.

The two men then sat down at Carrington on Tuesday for a clear-the-air conversation. Carrick has now said there is no decision to be made about the captaincy. He described Fernandes as an important player, who has led the team well for years and will go on doing so, and he said the benching was about what he felt was right for one game and nothing more.

A run that has no recent precedent

The numbers explain the tension. United are winless in eight and heading into their worst sequence since 2015-16, and a ninth game without a victory would be the first time that has happened since the 1988-89 season. They sit 16th in the Premier League with seven points from eight games, and their only league win so far came against Ipswich on 30 August.

Nearly 40 hours passed after the Bournemouth defeat before the club said anything about Carrick. In the end the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox all took part in talks, and the conclusion was that the head coach would stay, for now. Carrick says he does not need any assurances, and that he is not surprised to be in the job. It is the kind of answer a manager gives when he knows exactly how thin the ground is.

What comes next

The next test is Chelsea away on Saturday at 12:30, followed by Roma in the Champions League next Tuesday and Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 8 November, after which comes a two-week international break. It is easy to see that block as the window in which Carrick either turns the season around or runs out of road.

The open question is whether Fernandes starts at Stamford Bridge. Leaving him out again would reopen the argument, while restoring him without a result would raise doubts about the manager's authority. Our view is that he plays, because a midfield without its most creative passer is not going to fix a team that has scored ten goals in eight league games. Whether that is enough to stop the slide is another matter entirely.

Player and club context: Bruno Fernandes, Portugal midfielder, has been at Manchester United since January 2020. United are 16th in the Premier League with seven points from eight games and are next in action at Chelsea on Saturday 31 October (12:30 GMT).
