Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to sign a new contract at Leeds United, according to BBC Sport. The England striker's current deal runs until 2028, and the extension would settle a question that Manchester United were hoping to ask in January.

The 29-year-old joined Leeds on a free transfer from Everton and has scored 20 goals in 49 appearances for the club. That record explains both the new offer and the interest from Old Trafford. Leeds are not about to let a forward in this form walk into someone else's squad.

A blow for Manchester United

United have been looking at forwards for the January window after Benjamin Sesko was ruled out for an extended period while he recovers from a shin injury. Calvert-Lewin had been linked with a move, and a long new contract at Elland Road makes that route much harder. It does not close the door completely, because contracts do not stop clubs from bidding, but it changes the conversation.

England in the picture

Thomas Tuchel recalled Calvert-Lewin to the England squad in March. He missed out on the World Cup selection, but was picked for the most recent Nations League matches and won his 14th cap on 6 October in a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic. A striker who is scoring for his club and still being called up has a decent argument that his best years are not behind him.

What Leeds get from it

For Leeds the logic is simple. They have a proven goalscorer and a new contract gives them more control if anyone comes asking. For Calvert-Lewin it brings security and the chance to keep playing regularly. That matters when his England place, and a team that wants him, both depend on his form.
