Leeds supporters can stop worrying about their top striker. BBC Sport's Simon Stone reports that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to sign a new contract at Elland Road, which is bad news for any club hoping to sign him in January.

Leeds Lock In a Key Man

The England forward is 29 and currently has a deal that runs until 2028. He arrived on a free transfer from Everton and has scored 20 goals in 49 appearances for the club since. For a player brought in without a fee, that is a strong return, and it explains why Leeds want to reward him rather than risk losing him down the line.

A Blow for Manchester United

Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move to Manchester United, who are looking to bring in a forward in January. Their need became urgent after Benjamin Sesko was ruled out for an extended period while he recovers from a shin injury. A transfer next year was one of the ideas being talked about. BBC Sport describes the new deal as a blow to United's plans, and it leaves them searching for another route to a striker.

His England Journey

Calvert-Lewin has had a bumpy international path lately. Thomas Tuchel recalled him to the England squad in March, but he missed out on selection for the World Cup. He was picked again for the most recent Nations League matches and won his 14th cap on 6 October in the 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic.

The new deal fits with that story. A striker who is scoring regularly, back in the national squad and settled at a club he joined on a free, has little reason to be restless. For Leeds, tying him down sends a clear message about how they see the next few years.
