Moises Caicedo has been fined and handed eight penalty points after a court heard he was stopped in a £160,000 Audi RSQ8 without a valid licence or insurance. The Chelsea midfielder, already short of minutes this season because of a calf problem, is now four points short of the total that triggers an automatic driving ban.
What the court decided
According to the Daily Mail, as relayed by Goal, Caicedo appeared at Crawley magistrates' court this week. He was fined £1,444 and given eight points on his licence after being convicted of driving without a valid licence and without insurance. The stop took place back in April 2025, when he was pulled over near Chelsea's Cobham training base. The car was seized at the time, and Chelsea described the matter then as a personal one.
Caicedo has also been ordered to get the correct paperwork in place for the car, a machine that can reach 155mph and hit 60mph in 3.8 seconds.
Four points from a ban
The numbers matter because of how the totting-up system works. A driver who collects 12 points within three years faces an automatic six-month ban, and eight points leaves Caicedo with very little room for another slip. Another offence of any real weight would put him in the danger zone. For a player whose job involves a lot of travel to and from training and matches, that is a practical problem as well as an embarrassing one.
A season that has barely started for him
On the pitch, Caicedo has had a frustrating autumn. He joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 for what was then a record £115m, and he is normally among the first names on the team sheet when fit. This season, though, he has played just 14 minutes under Xabi Alonso because of the calf injury. To give it time to settle, he was left out of Ecuador's recent squad for fixtures against South Korea, Japan and Panama.
There is some encouraging news. Alonso said recently that Chelsea need not worry about the midfielder, and the suggestion is that he is close to a return and could feature when the club face Bournemouth. If he does, the attention will return to football, though the driving record will not go away quickly.
