Cardiff City had one hand on the points at half-time. Middlesbrough had other ideas. Two goals in the space of three minutes after the break dragged Boro level at the Riverside, and the afternoon ended 2-2 with Cardiff down to ten men.
Cardiff take control before the break
The visitors came to Teesside after a 5-1 win over Watford on Tuesday, and they started like a team that still believed it. Moylan put them in front in the 22nd minute with Tanner supplying the pass. Then Tanner got in on the scoring himself, with Moylan setting him up in first-half stoppage time. Sky Sports, who showed the game live, called it a stunner, and Boro went in at the interval 2-0 down.
Three minutes that changed the match
Middlesbrough needed only 13 minutes of the second half to make it a game again. Tommy Conway scored in the 58th minute from a Brittain assist, and before Cardiff could settle Will Lankshear, who had come off the bench, levelled things up in the 61st with Cozier-Duberry providing the final ball. It was a quickfire double that turned a flat afternoon at the Riverside into a noisy one, in front of a crowd of 28,991.
Osho sees red but there is no winner
The game had one more twist. Cardiff's Osho was shown a red card in the 83rd minute, which handed Middlesbrough the best part of ten minutes plus stoppage time against ten men. They could not find a way through. Neither side managed a third, and both had to settle for one point.
A point that feels different to each side
For Cardiff it will feel like two dropped, given they led by two at the break and had just won 5-1 in midweek. For Middlesbrough it is a point earned from a position that looked bleak at half-time, and the manner of the fightback will matter just as much as the result in a long Championship season.
