Alessio Dionisi walked into Vicarage Road on Saturday with his future a topic of open speculation, and he walked out with a win. Watford beat Charlton Athletic 2-0 in the Championship, a result that ended a run of four straight defeats and eased some of the pressure on the manager.
Kjerrumgaard breaks the deadlock
Nothing separated the two sides at half-time. Watford only found the opening in the 58th minute, when Kjerrumgaard scored to put them in front, and then they had to sweat for the rest of the match with a single-goal lead. A crowd of 18,031 saw the second arrive very late. Zemura scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time, with Vata credited with the assist, and that settled it.
The pressure Dionisi arrived with
The scoreline looks tidy, but the week behind it was anything but. Tuesday brought a 5-1 defeat at Cardiff, only days after a similarly heavy loss to Burnley at Vicarage Road. Before kick-off Watford were 22nd in the table after ten games, having lost six of them and each of the last four. They started the season with three games unbeaten, which included an opening-day win over Southampton, and they had won only once since, against Preston, who sat bottom of the division at the time.
Reports that the Italian was about to be sacked followed the Cardiff game. Dionisi, who was appointed in June, dismissed them in an interview with BBC Three Counties Radio, calling them "fake news" while accepting that speculation was normal in a negative moment. Former owner Elton John had added to the noise with a now-deleted Instagram post saying he was upset and disappointed, and ex-Watford midfielder Tom Ince described the display at Cardiff as soulless.
What one win does and does not change
Dionisi said he was in regular contact with the club's ownership group, including Gino Pozzo, and that after 14 years as a coach, bad spells were not new to him. A home win over Charlton buys him time and some calm, nothing more. The questions that surrounded the team before Saturday were about the run of results, and one afternoon does not answer them.
What it does give Watford is a base. A clean sheet, a second-half goal and a late second on home turf is a sensible template for a side that had lost its confidence, and the next few weeks will show whether it was the start of something or just a decent afternoon.
