The numbers say Luton Town should have won. The scoreboard says MK Dons did. In League One on Saturday, a side that BBC Sport described as winless before kick-off beat Luton 2-1 at Stadium MK, with a goal that Sky Sports labelled a contender for goal of the month and a late penalty doing the rest.

Gilbey's strike opens the scoring

MK Dons took the lead in the 25th minute through Gilbey. Sky Sports called the finish sensational and put it forward as a goal-of-the-month contender, which is a lot of weight to put on one swing of the boot, but it was enough to send the home side in at the break 1-0 up. For a team short of results, a half-time lead was something to protect.

Luton press and Clark levels

The statistics show how one-sided the match became over the 90 minutes. Luton had 62.3 per cent of the ball and finished with 25 shots to MK Dons' 11, five of them on target against the home side's three. They also won 29 aerial duels to 16 and earned 32 touches inside the opposition box to 25. Clark finally got them level in the 70th minute, with Mendel credited with the assist.

The equaliser was no surprise given how the match had gone, and for a while the momentum looked to be with the visitors.

Collins from the spot

MK Dons had other ideas. They were awarded a penalty in the 79th minute and Collins stepped up to put them back in front. After that it became a question of resistance. The MK Dons goalkeeper made five saves against one for his opposite number, which tells its own story about how much work the home side had to do.

A win that matters more than the stats

A side without a win does not need to be pretty to move on. MK Dons had only 11 shots and gave up the territory, yet they scored twice from the two moments that counted. For Luton, who did almost everything but score enough, it is a day to forget. Domination of possession is no use without a second goal, and League One tends to punish teams that cannot turn pressure into points.
