Danny Ings has signed for Wycombe Wanderers. The 34-year-old striker, capped three times by England and once of Burnley, Liverpool and Southampton, started this season without a club after a year in the Championship with Sheffield United. Wycombe are 14th in League One and currently without a manager. It is not the obvious landing spot, and that is rather the point.
He is the eighth club of a professional career that began seventeen years ago at Bournemouth. Along the way there have been 122 goals in 434 appearances, two of them last season at Bramall Lane. Very few strikers get to seventeen years. Fewer still are still being signed for their finishing at 34 rather than out of sentiment.
Available straight away
Ings joined up with the squad a week ago on the Friday and has trained with them since, which means he is available for selection immediately. Wycombe face Reading at Adams Park on Saturday, a ground where they have not won this season.
"Danny joined up with the team on Friday last week," said Tom Stockwell, Wycombe's director of football strategy and data intelligence. "He has trained with the group since, so we know he's fit and sharp, and ready." That is a fairly pointed way of saying the club has done its homework rather than taken a punt on a name.
A club in between managers
Wycombe parted company with Michael Duff on 8 September and Tom Hounsell has been in caretaker charge since. Signing an experienced striker during an interim spell is a particular kind of decision — the next permanent manager inherits him, whoever that turns out to be. It suggests the recruitment side of the building is operating to its own plan.
There is a familiar face waiting for him. Sam Vokes, now on the Wycombe coaching staff, played alongside Ings at Burnley. Whatever else has changed in seventeen years, a dressing room with somebody in it who already knows how you play is worth something in week one.
The career behind the move
Ings left Bournemouth for Burnley, then joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 as one of Brendan Rodgers' last signings before the manager's departure. Injuries took most of what should have been his peak years on Merseyside. The rebuild came at Southampton, and then came the big-money moves: Aston Villa, then West Ham United.
His England career amounts to three caps and one goal, scored in a friendly against Wales in 2020. Winchester-born, Bournemouth-raised as a footballer, and now turning up at a League One club that needs someone to put the ball in the net while it works out who is going to manage it. Careers are supposed to wind down at this stage. Ings has just walked into a side that has not won at home all season and been told he is fit, sharp and ready.
