Alexander Isak is back on Merseyside earlier than anyone at Liverpool would have liked. The striker picked up a minor injury while away with Sweden and has gone home to be looked at by his club's medical staff, which rules him out of the three matches Sweden have left in this international window.
The timing is awkward rather than alarming. Isak played the full ninety minutes on Friday and scored in Sweden's 2-1 win over Romania in the Nations League, so whatever he felt came late or came quietly. Nobody has put a name to the problem yet.
Four goals in five games, and then this
He had been going well. Four goals in five Premier League appearances is the kind of start that settles arguments, and it arrived after a first season at Anfield that did not go the way the fee suggested it would. The 27-year-old made only fourteen league appearances last term and scored three times, with injuries eating most of the year.
That is the context that makes a club send a car for a player rather than leave him with his national team for another week. Liverpool paid Newcastle 125m pounds for him in September last year. They have seen what the alternative looks like.
Why Sweden let him go without a fight
International managers do not usually release a forward who just scored for them. Sweden have three fixtures still to play in this break and Isak will be at none of them, which tells you the player and both sets of staff reached the same conclusion quickly rather than after a week of phone calls.
Liverpool now get him in their own building, with their own scans and their own physios, several days before he would otherwise have landed. For a squad that spent last season working around his absences, that is worth something even if the news itself is not welcome.
What happens next
The assessment comes first and everything else follows from it. A minor knock caught early can mean a few days off and nothing more. The club have said only that he will be assessed, and until that is done there is no honest way to put a return date on it.
What is certain is that Liverpool would rather find out now, in a fortnight with no fixtures, than on a Saturday afternoon in October.
Player context: Alexander Isak, 27, striker, Liverpool. Signed from Newcastle United in September 2025 in a deal worth 125m pounds. Fourteen Premier League appearances and three goals in his first season at the club; four goals in five league games so far this campaign. Scored in Sweden's 2-1 Nations League win over Romania on Friday and played the full match. He will miss Sweden's remaining three fixtures in this international break.
