Coventry City waited twenty-five years to get back to the Premier League. Four games in, they have no points and no goals, and Sunday's 5-0 defeat by Brighton at the CBS Arena was the afternoon that made the gap look unbridgeable.
Brighton matched their joint-biggest away win in the competition. Five different scorers, a red card for the hosts, and a Lewis Dunk goal that will be replayed long after the scoreline is forgotten.
How Brighton Took It Apart
For half an hour Coventry held. Then Kostoulas got in on 35 minutes and finished well, and the shape of the afternoon changed. Six minutes into the second half Yalcouye ran clear to make it two, and from there it was a question of how many.
The red card settled that. Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for an elbow on Maxim De Cuyper, leaving Frank Lampard's side ten men and two goals down with half an hour to play. Pascal Gross put away the penalty with twenty minutes left after Thomas fouled Kostoulas.
Dunk From Thirty Yards
Then, on 83 minutes, the Brighton captain did something he has not done in a very long time. Dunk picked the ball up outside the area, took aim from a good thirty yards, and found the top-left corner with Carl Rushworth nowhere near it. It was his first goal with his feet since 2023, which tells you how rarely he gets the invitation and how well he took it when he did.
Ayari added a fifth deep in stoppage time, sweeping home from the edge of the box. Five goals, five scorers, and fourth place in the table for Brighton.
Lampard's Problem Is Not Effort
The frustrating part for Coventry is that nothing about their season so far suggests a team that has given up. They have lost four in a row and have yet to score, which is a brutal set of numbers, but the first half-hour on Sunday was competitive enough. The moment a mistake arrives, though, the punishment at this level is immediate and it does not stop.
Lampard now has a fortnight of league football before the visit to Nottingham Forest on 19 September, and a first goal would be worth more to this squad than most managers could put into words. Getting one before confidence drains away is the job.
Match facts: Coventry City 0-5 Brighton and Hove Albion, CBS Arena, Sunday 13 September 2026. Scorers: Kostoulas 35, Yalcouye 51, Gross 70 (pen), Dunk 83, Ayari 90+. Red card: Awoniyi (Coventry). Brighton move up to fourth. Coventry remain pointless and goalless after four matches.
