It is done. After weeks of back-and-forth speculation, Manchester City have officially accepted Barcelona's bid for Rodrigo Hernández — better known to the football world simply as Rodri — with the Spanish giants set to pay a fee of £65.4m (€76.5m) for the reigning Ballon d'Or winner. The 30-year-old midfielder, who just months ago lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy with Spain, is heading home to Catalonia on a four-year contract.

The deal, which had been rumoured for much of the summer, finally reached its conclusion after Barcelona convinced City that their offer was final. Crucially, Rodri himself made his wishes clear: he wanted the Camp Nou, not the Bernabéu. Despite reported interest from Real Madrid, the man from Madrid chose to snub the city of his birth in favour of what he reportedly sees as a fresh and exciting project under Barça's current management.

The End of an Era at the Etihad

To say Rodri's departure marks the end of an era at Manchester City is not an understatement — it is, if anything, an understatement. Since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for around £62.8m, the defensive midfielder became arguably the single most important player in Pep Guardiola's historically dominant side. He was the engine. The metronome. The player who made everything tick.

In his time at City, Rodri collected four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups, and — most importantly — the 2023 UEFA Champions League. Last season, he capped off his extraordinary personal story by winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or, becoming the first City player to claim the game's most prestigious individual award. Then in the summer of 2026, he went and added a World Cup winner's medal to the shelf.

Now, after seven years of dominance in blue, that chapter is over. City sources say there are no hard feelings — Rodri served the club magnificently and leaves with their blessing.

Why Barcelona? Why Now?

The timing might seem unusual. At 30, some might question whether now is the right moment to move clubs. But those close to Rodri suggest the World Cup win gave him a sense of completion at City — a feeling that he had achieved everything possible and that a new challenge was the right move for this stage of his career.

Barcelona have been one of the most active clubs in this transfer window, rebuilding aggressively. Adding a player of Rodri's intelligence, experience, and technical authority gives their midfield an immediate uplift. He offers something few players in world football can: the ability to control an entire match from deep, dictate tempo, and break up opposition attacks before they have even developed.

His arrival is expected to shift Barcelona's tactical shape too. Manager Hansi Flick has publicly spoken about wanting to dominate the ball in central areas, and there are few better players in history at doing exactly that than the man now walking through Barça's doors.

A Legacy That Cannot Be Questioned

City fans, understandably, are not quite ready to celebrate. Losing your best midfielder — arguably your best player full stop — is never an easy pill to swallow, regardless of the fee. The £65m received will be reinvested, and the club's recruitment team are already said to be working on a replacement, though finding another Rodri is, by most experts' assessment, close to impossible.

What the fee does confirm is just how much Rodri's standing in the game has grown. He arrived at City in 2019 as a fine but relatively unheralded holding midfielder. He leaves as a World Cup winner, a Ballon d'Or holder, a Champions League champion, and one of the most decorated central midfielders of his generation.

Barcelona, for their part, know exactly what they are getting. This is not a risk or a gamble. This is a certainty — a player who has proven himself at the absolute highest level for years and who still has his best football ahead of him.

Camp Nou is getting its midfielder. Manchester City are getting £65 million. And the rest of Europe is quietly taking note that Barça mean business this season.
