Fulham's summer recruitment drive has run into an early obstacle after Rennes flatly rejected their opening bid of £20 million for promising centre-back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal.
The 20-year-old Moroccan defender has attracted genuine interest from Craven Cottage, and sources indicate the player himself is open to the Premier League move. But Rennes have been equally clear about their own position — they consider Ait Boudlal a core part of their future and are not prepared to sell him at this stage, certainly not for the figure Fulham put on the table.
Reports from France describe the initial offer as well below what Rennes would need to even consider letting him go. The Ligue 1 club is said to have dismissed the bid quickly, with one source characterising their stance as treating the defender as not for sale at any realistic price currently being discussed.
Ait Boudlal's rise has been sharp for a player still just 20 years old. He joined Rennes from the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Morocco in 2024 and immediately worked his way into the first-team fold, making 20 league appearances and contributing two goals from the back. A mid-season loan to Amiens gave him consistent playing time and he returned sharper for it.
At international level, Ait Boudlal is already a full Morocco international and was part of the squad that won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — a significant honour at 19.
For Fulham, the search for a new central defender goes on. The club's new management structure needs defensive reinforcement before the season begins, and while Ait Boudlal remains a target, alternative names are being assessed as Rennes show no signs of softening their position.
