Two managers, one shared job history, and a west London derby to settle who starts the season properly. Fulham host Chelsea at Craven Cottage on Monday night with both clubs opening a new chapter, and with a thread running through the dugouts that neither man will particularly want to discuss.
Alvaro Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid last season, after Alonso lasted seven months at the Bernabeu. Now Arbeloa has the Fulham job following Marco Silva's departure, and Alonso has Chelsea after Liam Rosenior's sacking. They meet at 8pm, live on Sky Sports.
Fulham took a risk and everyone knows it
Silva gave Fulham years of clarity. Mid-table finishes, tactical structure, a squad that knew exactly what it was doing on a wet Tuesday. Letting that go and hiring a coach with no Premier League experience is a swing, and if it doesn't land quickly the mood at the Cottage will turn before Christmas.
Arbeloa at least has a near full-strength squad. Joachim Andersen is suspended and Tom Cairney is injured. Beyond that, he can pick whoever he likes. Fulham finished last season level on 52 points with Chelsea, separated only by goal difference, and they beat the Blues 2-1 at home in the return fixture. This is not a mismatch on paper.
Alonso arrives with a method rather than a repair job
The case for Chelsea is that they've hired someone with an identifiable way of playing instead of another coach asked to extract more from the existing group. What Alonso built at Bayer Leverkusen was specific and repeatable. Real Madrid was a different kind of job, and most observers are willing to write off those seven months as the Bernabeu being the Bernabeu.
Alonso has confirmed Danny Welbeck is available, along with every player who returned late from the World Cup. That last detail matters more than it sounds. Chelsea have no European football this season, which means no midweek travel and a full week of coaching between most fixtures. Gary Neville thinks that alone could carry them to second.
The prediction
Sky Sports' Lewis Jones has Chelsea at 1-2 and rates them one of the better bets of the weekend. The logic holds up. Fulham are in a period of uncertainty, Chelsea have a settled squad and a clear plan, and away teams with both of those things usually find a way through a side still learning what its manager wants.
Craven Cottage has a habit of producing awkward evenings for visitors, though. Fulham beat Chelsea here last season and did it while down to ten men for part of the game. Expect Arbeloa's side to sit deeper than a Real Madrid coach would like and to hit the channels. Chelsea to edge it, but not comfortably.
