Ten goals. With a semi-final still to play. Kylian Mbappe has turned the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot race into something that looks less like a competition and more like a coronation.

France's captain has been in a different dimension this summer — pulling off things in a World Cup that even his extraordinary club career hadn't quite prepared us for. And barring something remarkable, the Golden Boot is heading to Paris.

The Scorers That Matter

Here is how the top of the scoring charts look heading into the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup:

Kylian Mbappe (France) — 10 goals
Six group stage goals (including back-to-back hat-tricks against Poland and Morocco), two in the Round of 16 against South Korea, one quarter-final opener against Germany, and one penalty against Argentina in the semi-final setup. He has scored in every single match France have played. His movement, his finishing, his ability to create something from nothing — it has all been at a level we have rarely seen from any player in any World Cup.

Lionel Messi (Argentina) — 8 goals
Yes, he is still doing it. At 38, Messi is defying biology, time, and football logic. Eight goals in six matches. Two hat-tricks. A free-kick against Brazil in the quarter-final that left the entire stadium silent for a second before it erupted. Argentina face England in the semi-final and, if Messi performs there, this conversation gets much more interesting.

Erling Haaland (Norway) — 7 goals
Eliminated at the quarter-final stage by England, Haaland finishes on seven and the Silver Boot is likely his. Seven goals in six games at a World Cup — in any other tournament, it would be the story of the summer. Mbappe and Messi have overshadowed him, but make no mistake, Haaland's World Cup was extraordinary.

Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain) — 6 goals
The Real Sociedad forward has been Spain's most clinical finisher, stepping up when it mattered most in the knockout rounds. Spain face France in the semi-final — and if Oyarzabal scores there, the gap to Mbappe begins to narrow significantly.

Julian Alvarez (Atletico Madrid) — 5 goals
Argentina's second striker has been quietly brilliant throughout, holding the line, winning headers, and scoring key goals in the knockout rounds. His partnership with Messi has been one of the talking points of the tournament.

Can Anyone Actually Catch Mbappe?

Realistically? It would take something extraordinary. Mbappe leads by two goals over Messi, who faces England in the semi-final and potentially a final if Argentina progress. Oyarzabal needs five goals in two matches, which is theoretically possible but statistically near-miraculous.

The more interesting question is: what happens if Mbappe scores in the semi-final and final? He could end this World Cup with 12, 13, or even 14 goals — figures that would begin to approach the all-time record in a single tournament.

Whatever happens in the final days of this World Cup, one thing is already clear: 2026 belongs to Mbappe. And unless someone produces something truly magical in the remaining matches, the Golden Boot is already decided.
