Tottenham Hotspur have broken their transfer record by signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for around £100 million. The move is the biggest outlay in Spurs history and makes their intent crystal clear heading into next season.

Tonali, 24, missed a chunk of his first Premier League season through a gambling-related suspension but came back in excellent form. His ability to press intelligently, carry the ball forward and control tempo from deep is exactly what Ange Postecoglou has needed in his midfield.

Newcastle resisted for some time, but the size of Tottenham's offer made it impossible to refuse. The Italian also wanted the move — Spurs' Champions League push and the ambition of the project appealed to him significantly more than staying put.

The deal represents a major statement from Tottenham, who have not landed a signing of this calibre in years. If Tonali hits the ground running at Spurs, he could be the piece that turns a promising side into genuine title contenders.

Newcastle will use the proceeds to reshape their squad, with multiple targets already identified to help replace the departed midfielder.
